Last night I was planning to watch Om Shanti & I did. Halfway into the movie I needed a break. So I ended up watching Sundarakanda on a whim. I wanted to post my thoughts about this movie and it will be my first Revisiting Movies post! Since it is not a traditional review, the format of these posts will be a tad different. Why don't I just go ahead and post it and you can see what I am talking about.
Film: Sundarakanda
Cast: Venkatesh, Meena, Aparna Sen, Bramhanandam, Gollapudi Maruti Rao, Kota Srinivasa Rao & Others.
Music: M.M. Keeravani
Director: K. Raghavendra Rao
*Spoiler Alert* Story Revealed After Jump.
The Story:
Venkateshwarlu(Venkatesh) joins as a lecturer in the same college that he passed out from. A bubbly and intelligent student Roja(Aparna Sen) plays pranks on him many times. Thukaram(Bramhanandam) is a fellow classmate of Venkateshwarlu who fails every year and still studies in the same college. Venkateshwarlu admonishes Thukaram a few times. A friend of Thukaram plants love letters in Venkateshwarlu's books under the name of Roja and the innocent Roja gets suspended. After realizing his mistake Venkateshwarlu apologizes to Roja, who is in love with him and wants to marry him. Not wanting to marry his student he marries Nanchari(Meena) an innocent, uneducated orphan. Undeterred by his marriage, Roja challenges him that she will end up as his wife. Roja's parents die in the riots of Ceylon and she is brought home by Nanchari, who treats her as a sister after she teaches her how to cook and sing. Venkateshwarlu tries hard to hide Roja's affections for him from his wife. Nanchari informs him that Roja has Cancer and she does not have much time. Roja's death forms the climax.
Post Script:
Sundarakanda is a light movie. There are no complex sub-plots and the whole screenplay is very breezy. The classroom scenes are fun. Meena steals the show with her innocent act. Her performance in her introduction scene and the devuda devuda song is hilarious. Music by Keeravani is good. I personally like Ulikipadaku, Inka Inka & the title song. A typical 90's film , the story line is refreshing. The movie's tone changes from comedy to drama in the last 20 minutes but it is justified as it closes the 2 wives thread. The movie was a blockbuster and brought accolades for both Venkatesh & Meena.
